Arizona Space Business Roundtable: Robert Zimmerman
5 to 6:30 p.m., Nov. 5, 2019

Robert Zimmerman is an award-winning science journalist and historian who has written six books and more than a hundred articles on science, engineering, and the history of space exploration and technology. His magazine and newspaper articles have appeared in Astronomy, Air & Space, Science, Natural History, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Wired, Invention & Technology, and a host of other publications. Bob's recent policy paper, "Capitalism in Space: Private Enterprise and Competition Reshape the Global Aerospace Launch Industry," documents the recent fast-paced changes being wrought worldwide by the new commercial space industry. He reports on space and science news at his website, Behind the Black (<a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=http://behindtheblack.com/&source=gmai…; href="http://behindtheblack.com/" target="_blank">http://behindtheblack.com). In addition to his writing, Mr. Zimmerman is also a cave explorer and cartographer, and has participated in numerous projects exploring and mapping preivously unknown caves across the eastern US. It is this activity that has allowed him to actually "go where no one else has gone before," thus providing him a better understanding of the perspective of engineers and scientists as they struggle to push the limits of human knowledge.

Bob's talk to the Roundtable will focus on some of the recent changes sweeping through NASA... leading the agency into a new willingness to fund developments at private space companies (including at least one here in Tucson!) rather than managing developments internally. Space startups have to reassess "NASA as customer" versus "NASA as competitor"... and traditional prime contractors have to reassess their business development strategies as well. It should be an interesting talk with an active Q&A! Location TBD, but on the UA campus. As always, please RSVP to Adriana Sanchez so we can estimate a headcount.
