Scientist Spotlight - Jack Holt
Jack Holt, director of our very own Earth Dynamics Observatory was featured in UA News today for his outstanding work on the Arizona Radio Echo Sounder (ARES) and use of said equipment to provide crucial clues about threats to the iconic Malaspina Glacier in Alaska as part of Operation IceBridge. These amazing findings were published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, and Holt was featured along with the paper’s co-author Brandon Tober, of the UA Department of Geosciences.
Operation IceBridge is a mission tasked with measuring changes in the thickness of glaciers, sea ice, and similar frozen features of the north and south. This particular paper reveals that most of the glacier resides below sea level and is undercut by many channels, leading to the accelerated melting of this large glacier.
