Drylands Focus Group Seminar

Dr. Brandt and Dr. Tucker will present their work on mapping trees in the arid and semi-arid areas of western Africa, using submeter resolution satellite imagery and deep learning. Their novel method has uncovered an unexpectedly large number of trees in the study area, with implications for the role of drylands in the global carbon cycle. This new method provides a powerful way to monitor trees outside of forests.
